THE DEAN OF AFRO CUBAN FILM
As one of the founding fathers of Afro-Cuban cinema, Sergio Giral is helping bring the black Cuban experience onto the screen.                               
With the screening of his 1979 film Maluala at this year's 13th Annual African Diaspora Film Festival, Afro Cuban director Sergio Giral says he wants to help broaden an understanding about the history of African enslavement in Cuba. "I believe I am the first Cuban to tackle this subject in Cuba when I made El Otro Francisco (The Other Francisco, 1975). El Otro Francisco was the first of my trilogy on slavery. It was followed by Rancheodor (Slave Hunter, 1976) and then Maluala. I just tried to portray the slave's struggle for freedom and the conditions they lived under slavery”...
